A new initiative aimed at enhancing the ability of health and care professionals to engage in and conduct research—known as building research capacity—has launched this month (September).
Funded through the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the Health and Care Professionals Internship Programme is open to registered health and care professionals in Kent, Surrey and Sussex who wish to develop their research capabilities—whether they are new to research or seeking to build on existing skills.
The programme led by the Applied Research Collaboration Kent Surrey and Susses (ARC KSS) and hosted by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust - welcomes participants from all clinical backgrounds, such as nursing, allied health professions, midwifery, pharmacy, social care, and other roles within health and care. It is especially geared towards supporting those who have not previously had the chance to engage in research, as well as individuals from groups and professions that are less represented in research activities.
The programme will run for three years, supporting 23 interns annually, with awards of up to £10,000 each.
These internships are tailored to individual learning needs and career aspirations, offering opportunities across four progressive levels:
- Stepping into research
- Growing in research
- Research delivery leadership
- Clinical/practitioner academic leadership.
Interns will benefit from placements, mentorship, academic modules, and small-scale research projects. The programme is designed to be inclusive, with targeted outreach to under-represented groups and professions, and a commitment to embedding public and patient involvement throughout.
As part of the launch, ARC KSS will be hosting a free information webinar specifically for managers on:
Thursday, 2 October
2-3pm
Online (Teams)
🔗Secure your place via Eventbrite.
This online session is designed for intern managers who are keen to learn effective mentoring techniques and practical strategies to strengthen their intern programme and foster professional development. It is also an opportunity to network with other managers, exchange experiences, and gain valuable guidance.
Beth Flowers, ARC KSS Academy Manager, says: "Managers play a crucial role by supporting and encouraging staff to participate in these programmes, helping to establish a culture of innovation and ensuring teams possess the skills necessary for evidence-based practice. With their support, staff can access key development opportunities that benefit both themselves and the organisation as a whole."
Why should managers encourage applications?
- Develop research-engaged professionals: Enhance your team’s skills and evidence-based practice.
- Promote equity and inclusion: The programme actively supports under-represented groups.
- Strengthen your service: Interns bring back new knowledge, networks, and leadership skills.
