Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex (HIN Kent Surrey Sussex), in collaboration with the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT), has launched a new resource to help clinicians better support young adults navigating mental health challenges.
The guide, titled Engaging Young Adults with Mental Health Challenges: A Clinician’s Guide, is designed for professionals working with individuals aged 18–25 - a group disproportionately affected by mental health conditions. In 2023, nearly one in four young people in this age range were estimated to have a probable mental health disorder, yet engagement with services remains low.
Drawing on insights from two youth summits involving young people and key stakeholders, the guide offers practical strategies and evidence-based approaches to improve engagement, early intervention, and treatment outcomes. It also explores the role of digital innovation in enhancing service delivery.
Becca Randell, Mental Health Lead, Health Innovation KSS and Starting Well Implementation Manager at ARC KSS, says: “This user-friendly guide empowers adult mental health clinicians to bridge the gap between children’s and adult services. It provides valuable insight into how we can make a real difference to young people’s lives through meaningful engagement and effective support.”
Dr Oliver Dale, Consultant Psychiatrist and Chief Medical Officer, SPFT, says: “As a community psychiatrist, I know how rewarding it is to work with young adults. This guide offers credible, practical ideas drawn from lived experience, and I’m pleased to recommend it to colleagues.”
Dr Jane Padmore (RMN), Chief Executive Officer, SPFT, says: “We must do everything we can to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and encourage young people to seek help early. This guide is an important step in that direction.”
