The Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex is launching the second round of the National Institute for Health and Care Research Health and Care Professional Internship Programme in the South East.
Join our launch webinar on Tuesday 14 July 2026.
If you work in health or care in Kent, Surrey or Sussex and want to learn more about research, this internship programme could be a good next step.
The programme is open to registered health and care professionals who do not have a PhD. This includes people working in nursing, social work, physiotherapy, radiography, pharmacy and other health and care roles. You do not need to be an experienced researcher to apply.
The programme is led by Dr Julie MacInnes, hosted by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. This round will support 33 interns. Each intern can receive up to £10,000 to help cover time, training and activities that support their development.
There are four internship options, depending on your experience and goals. The programme can support you if you are new to research, want to build your confidence, want to develop research leadership skills, or are thinking about a future clinical academic career. Support may include placements, mentoring, taught learning, and small research or service improvement projects.
The programme aims to include professions and communities that are less often represented in research. It welcomes applications from people with different backgrounds and experiences. In this round, 10 of the 33 places are set aside for people working in radiography and pharmacy.
By helping more health and care staff get involved in research, the programme aims to improve services, support better care, and create more opportunities for staff across Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
