More than 50 developing researchers joined together virtually, in May, for the Career Options and Pathways for Developing Researchers event.

Jointly hosted by Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) the half-day event focused on equipping researchers with the skills and insights needed to advance their careers, both within and beyond academia.

Matt Bemment, Digital Communications Officer at BSMSdelivered an engaging session on building a social media presence, emphasizing the importance of online visibility for researchers.

Participants also heard inspiring research journeys from both Matt Bushell, a Social Work Manager at Kent County Council and ARC KSS Embedded Researcher and Eva Eastman, an Occupational Therapist at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and ARC KSS Future Leader Awardee. Dr. Ferhana Hashem, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Kent's, Centre for Health Services Studies provided valuable insights from her experience as an NIHR panel member, while Dr. Cate Bell shared Tips and Tricks on Writing a Fellowship Application, drawing from her role as Programme Lead for Clinical Academic Careers at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

The event also featured an insightful mentor-mentee dialogue, with Sharon Manship, Research Associate at the University of Kent and ARC KSS Future Leader Awardee and Molly Lambourn, Project Officer and Research Co-ordinator at the University of Kent discussing their perspectives on mentorship and career growth.

Designed to empower researchers at all stages, the event addressed key topics like effective communication, and teamwork. Participants were encouraged to take charge of their career paths by setting clear goals, recognising their strengths, and building professional networks. Reflecting on the day, attendees expressed appreciation for the practical advice and inspiration provided.
