Bernadette is a Senior Research Fellow in the Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre at the University of Surrey, where she has worked on a broad range of projects, primarily in the domain of public health nutrition. She has considerable experience of using both qualitative and quantitative research methods and is very experienced in all aspects of project management. Sources of funding for projects have included the Food Standards Agency, EU FP6 and Horizon 2020, Safefood and most recently Surrey County Council.

Bernadette was the Surrey Academic Site lead and former Deputy Director of the NIHR Research Design Service South East (RDS SE). She joined the RDS SE as an adviser in March 2010 and has considerable experience of supporting researchers with all aspects of preparing applications for applied health and social care research funding.

Since 2019 Bernadette has the role of Deputy Lead at Surrey for the Applied Research Collaboration in Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS), where she supports the Digital Innovation and Health & Social Care Economics themes and ARC activities more broadly across the University. Currently Bernadette is actively involved in supporting the ARC KSS funded Youth Research Partnership project, In Our Own Words, led by Surrey County Council.

Bernadette is a senior member of the University of Surrey Ethics Committee and is currently the Deputy Chair for the Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences.

Bernadette has a particular interest in supporting the growth of health and social care research capacity in the region and is currently a mentor with the ARC KSS Academy. She has been involved for several years in CRN- funded initiatives that have supported the development of health and social care professionals locally and was involved in piloting the NIHR Nursing and Midwifery Incubator Advisory Service.
