Dear Colleagues,
This edition of our newsletter coincides with the end of the first four years of Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey & Sussex (ARC KSS) and our recently published annual summary report that demonstrates just how far we have come.
Starting as a new ARC in October 2019, our plans were to build partnerships, invest in strengthening our applied health and care research capacity and support the growth of applied research across the region.
It was a bit of a step into the unknown and within six months we were in lockdown as the first wave of COVID hit. Despite being very new, the presence of the an ARC in the region meant we could invest some of our limited funding into some small COVID related projects - some of which have gone on to have national impact.
Over the years, we have also invested in a number of innovative and unique research projects - some of which are highlighted in the annual report.
Having an ARC has also meant that the region has received additional investment in increasing research

capacity in mental health, dementia and, most recently, additional funding for social care. The ARC has also supported significant strategic bids including the Health Determinants Research Collaboration in Medway Council.
We should all be proud of what we have achieved over the last four years, and I think the ARC has had a significant impact on the region. But, there is still much more to do.
The ARC will continue to focus on supporting and sustaining partnerships between our academic community, local health and care services and local communities across the region. We have enormous talent in our universities, health and care services and among our public partners and the ARC will continue to ensure we work together.
Over the next 12 months, or so, we will start to think about the core elements of any application for future funding. The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is currently undertaking a review of all 15 ARCs in England and the outcome of this will help inform our next stage, along with the views of all our local partners.
So, the next two years is not thinking about the end of our first contract, but planning what ARC phase two will look like from 2026.

| New resource launched to optimise and support end-of-life care | Researchers from the Centre for Health Service Studies (CHSS) at the University of Kent together with Pilgrims Hospices and Medway Community Healthcare have developed, piloted and launched a free, online, resource to better support patients that prefer to die at home, and their families.

Pledges to support care leaver's mental health: two years on | To mark World Mental Health Day, the Health Innovation Kent Surrey and Sussex and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) followed up on the 33 pledges made by local authorities, universities, voluntary organisations and other government departments, from across the region, to find out what progress they had made to better support young people leaving care.

Study into the quality of life for autistic children and young people
Sophie McGrevey, a researcher from Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust is conducting an Applied Research Collaboration Kent Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS) funded research study, that will look at quality of life in autistic children and young people.
Sophie is looking for primary and secondary schools, in the KSS area, to take part in a prevalence questionnaire to better understand the prevalence of autism in the region, as well as inviting autistic children to take part in an interview and answer questions about their experiences in school and what could be put in place to better support their needs.

NHS England REN Cohort 2 Partners – joint statement | Sussex Integrated Care System (ICS), in partnership with Brighton and Sussex Health Research Partnership (HRP), has been awarded £100,000 of funding from NHS England to work in partnership with voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations across Sussex, with the aim to engage minoritised groups from areas of deprivation and to improve research participation.

Name change for Academic Health Science Network | From 1 October 2023, Kent Surrey Sussex Academic Health Science Network (KSS AHSN) has been operating under its new name: Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex (Health Innovation KSS).
The organisation itself will not alter how it operates as a result of the change, but the new name better reflects the organisation’s role in supporting development and spread of innovation across health and care services.

| | Leadership coaching for NIHR Leaders
Senior Leaders at the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) have the opportunity to apply for virtual 90-minute coaching sessions with an experienced executive coach. The coaching will provide senior leaders with an opportunity to reflect and consider solutions to addressing a challenge they are facing professionally. If, after the coaching session, the leader wishes to access additional coaching to further explore the issues raised, this will need to be agreed with their line manager and arrange funding from their own cost centre as part of their development plan. The individual coaching session will be entirely confidential.
EligibilityFor staff to be eligible for this coaching programme they must have demonstrable leadership influence as part of NIHR. They should manage strategic operations and be a leader of a large/sizeable team.
How to applyTo express an interest in leadership coaching please complete this Expression of Interest form.
Applications for coaching will close 12pm Thursday 30 November, however, note that this may close early in the event of oversubscription. Those who are successful will be notified in early December and will be able to book a slot on a first come, first served basis.
Future Focused Leadership Programme
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Academy provides postdoctoral Academy Members with leadership development through its Future-Focused Leadership Programme (FFLP). Cohort 2 of the FFLP is now open for applications for the Leaders' stream. You can find out more information about the programme and apply now on the NIHR Academy FFLP webpage. The closing date for applications is 1pm on 7 December 2023. |

| NIHR Pre-Application Support Fund | The NIHR Pre-Application Support Fund provides extra support to those who need it to enhance their chances of making a successful application to an NIHR career development scheme in the future. Rather than part of a standard NIHR career pathway, the Pre-Application Support Fund is there for individuals who require additional support in order to prepare a competitive application. We particularly encourage applications from groups and professions under-represented within NIHR.
Please note the first round closes on Thursday 30 November 2023.

Development and Skills Enhancement Award (DSE) | The National Institute for Health and Care Reasearch (NIHR) Development and Skills Enhancement Award (DSE) is a post-doctoral level funding opportunity aimed at supporting early to mid-career researchers in gaining specific skills and experience to underpin the next phase of their research career.
The DSE will be open to applications all year round with three review periods in August, December and April.

Short Placement Awards for Research Collaboration | The National Institute for Health and Care Research's(NIHR) Short Placement Awards for Research Collaboration (SPARC) scheme offers NIHR Academy members (formal pre-doctoral training award holders/Masters students, PhD or early career post-doctoral researchers) supported by a part of NIHR Infrastructure (Biomedical Research Centres, Applied Research Collaborations, Patient Safety Research Collaborations), a NIHR Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) or an NIHR School, an opportunity to spend time in other parts of the NIHR; to network, train in a specific skill or collaborate with other researchers/specialists.
The scheme is designed to optimise and enhance an individuals’ research training experience, as well as their CVs and careers.

Local Authority Short Placement Award for Research Collaboration
| The National Institute for Health and Care Reearch's (NIHR) Local Authority Short Placement Award for Research Collaboration (LA SPARC) Scheme (Round 3) is now open to applications.
This scheme is designed to support individuals working in local authority settings, and NIHR Academy members, to design and apply for funds to undertake short placements, allowing them to move between NIHR and local authority settings in either direction.
